It is starting to feel ever so slightly festive in London. We are, after all, only five weeks away from Christmas…
As the national lockdown continues, here are some of the places you can pick up mulled wine to takeaway.
It truly is the perfect pick-me-up to accompany those socially distant walks.
The Sun Tavern, Bethnal Green
This Bethnal Green pub is offering mulled wine from their takeaway hatch every day between 2pm and 8pm, for £5 a go.
The Red Lion & Sun, Highgate
Earlier on in the month, the landlord of The Red Lion & Sun placed a telephone a few metres away from its outside bar so customers could easily place orders from nearby.
The pub is serving up takeaway tipples from their cute cabin outside.
There are even antibacterial wipes to clean the phone before you call. How very thoughtful.
Clissold Park Tavern, Clissold Park
For a scenic walk and mulled wine, head to Clissold Park Tavern for a drink – and they also offer hot toddies.
The Woodman, Highgate
Another Highgate pub, The Woodman, is a good stop off point for your takeaway wine.
Bar Fox also spotted takeaway pulled pork sandwiches and BBQ ribs from their grill, an absolute essential pairing…
The Crabtree, Hammersmith
River-backed pub The Crabtree is offering takeaway cocktails, mulled wine and roast dinners if you order via their website.
Situated between Putney and Hammersmith Bridge, it’s an excellent choice for an al-fresco tipple.
How to make mulled wine at home
London bar Reverend JW Simpson is here to show us how you can make it at home.
750ml light and fruity red wine
250ml Tawny port
2 cinnamon sticks
12 wholes cloves
2 star anise
2 lemons (quartered, squeezed and left in)
3 Jaffa oranges (quartered, squeezed and left in)
100g soft muscavado sugar
In a pan, add the juice of the citrus (keep the fruit), sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and a little of the red wine.
Keep the heat quite high while stirring to create a syrup.
Once the syrup is thick reduce the heat, add the rest of the wine, the port, the citrus fruit, star anise. Let the mulled wine simmer for 5 mins until it is nicely warm.
Serve with a clove studded orange slice and a cinnamon stick.
