PS5 Showcase event: PlayStation 5 release date and price announced – Evening Standard

Sony has finally announced the price and release date for the PS5 and the PlayStation 5 Digital console.

The console will be released worldwide on November 19, with some areas of the world getting it a bit earlier.

You can buy a PS5 console for the price of £449, which is cheaper than a lot of people expected and the same price as the Xbox Series X.

There will also be a digital-only version released, which will be £359. Compared the Xbox Series X, the price for the normal console is exactly the same at £449 while the Series S is £100 cheaper than the PS5 Digital-only console.

The Series S is clearly cheaper because it isn’t the same operating power or SSD size as the Series X, while the only difference with the digital-only PS5 is that it has no disc tray – everything else is the same inside.

America, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea will get the PS5 on November 12. The rest of the world, the UK included, will be getting the PS5 on November 19.

Also announced in the showcase was Final Fantasy XVI, the long-rumoured Harry Potter RPG has been officially revealed and a new God of War game was announced

Obviously, the main thing people are interested in is seeing a release date and price finally confirmed for the PS5. This showcase could give us this, but there’s also credible rumours to suggests a surprise announcement… a brand new Final Fantasy title.

One of the big announcements from the last PS5 event in June was Demon’s Souls. It would be excellent if Sony gave us an extended look at this title, as it’s sure to be a console-seller for many.

Speaking of selling consoles – if you simply can’t wait to see what the price for a regular PS5 will be, then you can always pre-order this gold one…. for an outrageous £8000

For what it’s worth, my personal predictions for tonight are:

Ratchet and Clank extended look
Demon’s Souls release date/window and a closer look at gameplay.
It does seem kinda likely we’ll get some sort of Final Fantasy announcement, but perhaps it’s just VII Remake pt 1 coming to PS5.
Naturally, a price and release date for the console needs to come before a lot of this, so, you know, do your best Sony…

On the topic of backwards compatibility, Sony has very briefly mentioned that the “100 best PS4 games” will be available on the PS5 at launch… Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen? Spelunky? Who decides this…

But… but what about Bloodborne 2?! Well, considering how we’re getting Demon’s Souls remake (or rather, reimagining) the chances of a Bloodborne 2 announcement this late in the year seems unlikely.

There’s been a lot of clamouring for attention from Gearbox when it comes to Godfall. While it looks like one of the blandest action combat games ever, there’s no denying it’s pretty. We can probably expect to see this come a cropper tonight

There really isn’t an awful lot to go on from Sony, and it seems like it wants to be as vague as possible concerning this event. If this turns out to be just gameplay and no console price or release, the reaction is going to be, um, spirited

There are only about 15 minutes left until the show begins. Doesn’t it make you feel a bit whistful that Microsoft never got this hype buildup since its consoles were leaked early?

Final Fantasy. The music is unmistakeable. From this trailer, it almost seems like it is set in the same world as Final Fantasy XV, expect more gothic and violent.

We’re now getting a look at Spider-Man: Miles Morales running on a PS5 console. Insomniac Games is walking us through the title

It’s great to see Miles take centre stage in this. While it’s not its own standalone game, and instead more of an expansion, it certainly looks gorgeous and seems to play extremely fluid. Marvel sure loves its bridge collapses…
