LIVE updates as Andy Burnham and London Mayor Sadiq Khan host event – Manchester Evening News
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, City of Liverpool Regional Mayor Steve Rotheram and London Mayor Sadiq Khan are joining forces to back millions of self-employed people who are ‘excluded from government support’.
They are calling on the government to provide support for almost three million people who have not benefited from financial support initiatives during the coronavirus pandemic and have fallen through the gaps.
Yesterday, the Mayors wrote a joint letter to the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, detailing how they are “doing everything within our power to stop the spread of the virus and protect the people we represent from the economic and social impacts of this cruel disease.”
They said the consequences of which will be “felt for years to come” and they welcomed the furlough extension and help for the self-employed.
Yet, despite this there remains a “staggering 2.9 million people who are simply not eligible from the Covid-19 financial support schemes.”
The Mayors describe the “intolerable position” for businesses and individuals to still be in after eight months.
They urged the Chancellor to rectify the significant gaps in the self-employed scheme and to reduce the number of people excluded and to focus on making the UK’s main safety net work better for those workers.
They said so many self-employed workers are “relying on Universal Credit instead”.
