Knife-wielding attacker struck, dragged by pickup truck: Witnesses – The London Free Press

A knife-wielding man was chasing a pickup truck when he was struck by the vehicle and dragged across the parking lot of an east London auto-body shop, witnesses say.

A man entered the business on Kitchener Avenue, east of Adelaide Street North and Hamilton Road, on Tuesday and started arguing with the owner, says a customer who was inside at the time.

The man left after the business owner ordered him off of the property. But he returned in a car a short time later, said the witness, who asked to not be identified due to the violent nature of what he saw.

The man parked the car behind the shop and came back to the business, where he pulled out a knife and went after the owner, the customer said.

“He jumps in that black truck trying to get away,” the witness said of the owner, gesturing toward a black Dodge Ram pickup truck surrounded by police tape.

The knife-wielding man ran toward the driver’s window as the truck was backing out of the parking lot before it drove forward and struck him, said the customer, who called 911.

“He was bleeding under his back, his chin,” he said of the injured man.

Police have formally said only that they were called to Kitchener Avenue for a fight between two men at 10:15 a.m. Officers arrived and found a man had been struck by a vehicle. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, Staff Sgt. Sean Travis said at the scene.

The man who was stuck by the pickup was dragged almost five metres across the parking lot, said a second witness who showed a Free Press reporter a cellphone photo of a man laying on the ground surrounded by emergency workers.

Police closed off a section of Kitchener Avenue Tuesday morning while investigators collected evidence. Forensic identification officers took photographs of the pickup truck, while traffic specialists recorded measurements to reconstruct the collision. Rubber pylons were used to hold down two tarps placed beside the pickup.

Behind the auto-body shop, a police cruiser held a second crime scene: police tape surrounded a gold Nissan Altima.
