Driver charged after confrontation at London auto shop – The London Free Press

A man left clinging to life after being struck by a pickup truck outside an east London auto body shop has a history of disruptive behaviour at the complex where the incident happened, the property manager says.

One man is charged following a dispute Tuesday morning that witnesses said began with an argument and ended with one of the men being dragged underneath a pickup truck for several metres.

Police on Wednesday announced Faud Akkila, 32, is charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and aggravated assault.

Akkila, who was taken into custody Tuesday and held overnight, was released Wednesday after a brief court appearance.

Witnesses recounted a wild scene Tuesday after a man entered an auto body shop on Kitchener Avenue, northeast of Adelaide Street and Hamilton Road, and started arguing with the business owner.

The man left before returning with a knife, and the businesses owner got into a black Dodge Ram pickup and was backing out of the parking lot when the knife-wielding man ran at the vehicle, witnesses said.

The truck drove forward and struck the man, dragging him nearly five metres, the witnesses said.

The man struck suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning, police said.

The injured man runs a mechanic shop in the same complex where he was struck, though he’d recently been evicted for aggressive behaviour and threatening the property owner, said Gerry Deschamps, the property manager of the sprawling complex that covers an entire city block.

“We asked him to leave over a month ago,” Deschamps said, adding the man was given until October to vacate the bay he used to run his business. “We just wanted him out because we didn’t want to deal with (him) anymore.”

Police have only publicly said they were called Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. for a fight between two men at a Kitchener Avenue address, where officers found a man who’d been struck by a vehicle.

Investigators remained on the scene for several hours Tuesday. Forensic officers could be seen taking photographs of the Ram’s undercarriage, while traffic specialists took measurements to reconstruct the collision.
