Aldgate East station closed off by armed police in London’s East End – The Sun

A MAN sparked an emergency response when he abandoned his van and ran through East London – after running out of fuel.

Cops flooded to Aldgate East today after reports of a man acting suspiciously, with buildings partially evacuated.

Police were seen cordoning off the scene in Aldgate East

Eyewitness Charley McNally told The Sun Online police examined the van, saying: “There is a suspicious van on the street.

“Everything on the ground level has been evacuated.”

But just hours later, Tower Hamlets Police appeared to explain just why the emergency unfolded, saying: “Project Servator officers were on scene dealing with an incident where a male was seen to abandon his van and run into Aldgate.

“Police acted swiftly to evacuate the area for public safety, #thatswhatweareherefor outcome pls make sure you have enough fuel for you journey #ooops”

Met Police confirmed they had been called just before 11am to reports of a man “acting suspiciously” near Aldgate East Station.

A spokesperson said: “Officers attended and road closures were put in place.

“Following enquiries, the incident was deemed non-suspicious and stood down.”

No one was arrested.

Tower Hamlets Police confirmed: “Whitechapel High street closed from Commercial Street west bound due to police incident. We will endeavour to open up as quickly as possibly.”

Aldgate East Tube station was closed off during the incident.

However, police later confirmed the incident had been resolved.

Tower Hamlets Police said: “Police incident on Whitechapel High Street has been resolved. Roads are reopening.”

Other frightened locals shared footage of the scene, with one writing at the time: “There is an apparent threat outside our building (Aldgate East) – we’ve been instructed to stay inside and not leave.”

Another added: “Road blocks and armed police outside East Aldgate station.”
